Round Rock Police release the name of the individual shot in the incident on Monday.

The deceased individual from yesterday’s officer-involved shooting in Round Rock has been identified as Antonio Diaz, a Hispanic male, 39 years of age. Diaz had been staying in various hotels without a permanent residence.

Three officers entered the building Monday morning to search for an individual who was reported to be threatening guests and staff at the hotel with a handgun. Upon entering the building the three officers were confronted by Diaz. One officer discharged his weapon striking Diaz. The officers immediately attended to Diaz until First Responders from Round Rock Fire Department who were staged nearby took over. They were not successful in reviving Diaz and he was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The Officer who discharged his weapon is Officer Aaron Grigsby. Officer Grigsby joined the Round Rock Police Department in September 2020 as a lateral transfer. All three officers who were present at the shooting are now on paid administrative leave per RRPD policy during the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing and is being assisted by the Williamson County District Attorney’s Office, Texas Rangers, Williamson County Justice of the Peace, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Witnesses who were present were all interviewed and the officer’s body camera video and the building’s security camera video are being reviewed as part of the investigation.

The last Round Rock Police officer-involved shooting was in January 2018.
