We have have been researching multiple social media platforms and tried to get our heads around what each does, and the pros and cons of each platform.
Three of the platforms we looked at were Parler, MeWe, and Rumble. We found that Parler more closely resembles Twitter. Rumble, is a video distribution platform that is a lot like Youtube, and MeWe works much like Facebook. All are much, much smaller platforms than Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube but they have not been as restrictive as the bigger platforms.
MeWe made its official launch in Austin at South by Southwest (SXSW) in 2016. The Founder and CEO of MeWe, Mark Weinstein is known as a leading privacy advocate and one of the visionary inventors of social networking. One of the declared “advantages” of the MeWe platform is “they designed and built the world’s first social network with privacy-by-design for its members”. No Ads. No Spyware.
A basic membership for individuals to MeWe is free, however, there is a small monthly fee for pages for businesses and organizations. The issue of the fee, $1.99 per month, for our eNews page is offset by the fact you currently get 100% distribution to your followers. Today we have over 750 followers on Facebook, however, our typical distribution is around 50 people. Over the last two months, we have acquired more than 50 followers on MeWe. So in less than two months, we have the same amount of distribution on MeWe that took us 4 years and hundreds of dollars in advertising to develop on Facebook.
In the last week, MeWe reported that they have been adding over 400,000 users per day and now has more than 14 million members. Part of the increase in new users has been due to the suspension of Parler, but it is unlikely to slow down as more and more people discover the MeWe platform.
